Frequently Asked Questions

What is hypnosis?

Hypnosis is defined many ways, but simply, hypnosis is a state of focused concentration in which the subconscious mind is opened to positive suggestions.

In everyday life we use our conscious mind to control those things we are fully aware of. The subconscious mind, however, is like a file cabinet for all the experiences of our lives. This is where the instinctive bodily functions, such as breathing, are controlled. Hypnosis helps to access this part of the mind and put positive suggestions into your subconscious mind, so the changes you would like to make can become “instinctive”.

Why choose hypnosis?

Hypnosis is a QUICK and EFFECTIVE way to address nearly any issue in your life. In hypnosis, the sub-conscious mind is opened up to the positive suggestions given by your hypnotist. The subconscious mind then easily accepts these suggestions and makes them a part of who you are.

Habits and certain emotional connections (such as emotional eating) are controlled by the subconscious mind. Therefore, accessing the subconscious mind is of major importance in making positive changes in your life.

The RESULTS ARE PERMANENT! When an idea is accepted to the subconscious mind, it becomes a part of your permanent memory.

What happens in a session/while in hypnosis?

Your hypnotist, Jennifer, will welcome you into a comfortable and safe environment. I spend time getting to know you and answer any questions you may have regarding hypnosis.

A customized session, along with the latest in hypnosis techniques, will be used to guide you into a state of focused concentration. When you focus on your hypnotist’s instructions, your conscious mind will naturally step down and allow your subconscious mind to open. Jennifer will guide you to the most beneficial level of relaxation and hypnosis, to give the suggestions most helpful for you. Accepting these suggestions is easy in hypnosis because the subconscious will accept these positive suggestions as truth and always keep them with you for a new sense of success in your life.

Your first session will last 1-2 hours depending on the issue. Subsequent sessions will last approximately 45 minutes.

What does hypnosis feel like?

Everyone experiences hypnosis differently. Some experiences others have had include feeling as though you are in a very relaxed state, or that your body or muscles feel very heavy, or sometimes very light. Some people feel as though their entire body is tingling. Most people say they feel very peaceful and content.

During hypnosis you will be aware of those things around you. Many people expect that they will feel as though they are asleep, however, hypnosis is not sleep and hypnosis does not mean you are unconscious. You will hear everything and you will remember everything. Think of hypnosis as the gray area between waking and sleeping.

Can I really be hypnotized the first session?

Yes! Everyone experience hypnosis to a different level. Most people go into a medium level of hypnosis their very first session, however, some go very deep and some just to a light level. A very good thing about hypnosis is that the level of hypnosis has nothing to do with the acceptance of positive suggestions! Your session will be beneficial! People who go deeper do not necessarily “do better”.

As with many things, the more you experience hypnosis, the better you get at being hypnotized!

You can go as deep as you choose to let yourself go!

What if I cannot be hypnotized?

Anyone with normal intelligence and the ability to follow simple instructions can be hypnotized. Hypnosis is a natural state that we all experience every day. The two most common states of hypnosis are just before you fall asleep at night and just before you wake each morning. You can also experience hypnosis while doing any activity that engages your attention so much that you become unaware of other things going on around you.

Is hypnosis safe?

HYPNOSIS IS VERY SAFE!

It is impossible to get stuck in hypnosis. A person in hypnosis is always in control and can emerge at anytime. (Although, some people say they enjoy their experience so much they wish they could stay in a hypnotic state all the time!)

Hypnosis is far from the scary, mind controlling state that Hollywood has portrayed. Hypnosis is a common and completely natural state of mind.

Have you ever been driving and suddenly recognized that you don’t remember the last mile or two?

Have you ever been so engrossed in a movie you don’t really notice what is going on around you?

Have you ever read a book and have someone speak to you, yet you don’t hear a word they say?

If you answered “Yes” to any of these questions, you have experienced a state of hypnosis; you just did not call it “hypnosis”!

Can a person be hypnotized to do something they do not want to?

NO! A person in a hypnotic state is in control at all times. You cannot be made to do, say, or accept anything under hypnosis that you do not truly want to.

Most often a person under hypnosis can hear everything their hypnotist says. The mind has what is known as a “Critical Factor”, which acts like a SPAM filter between the conscious and subconscious mind, so if it does not like a suggestions, it will simply reject it. That is why a person cannot be hypnotized to do anything they do not truly want to do.

You choose to come to a hypnosis session to make a change in your life. Jennifer will work with you, as your guide and coach, and the two of us, as a team, will work to solve the issues you have come to address.

Will you make me cluck like a chicken?

Absolutely NOT!

If you have seen a stage show, the participants are willing subjects. They, to some degree, have a bit of a desire to be in the spot light and they know they will be asked to do silly things. That is why they accept the funny suggestions given by the hypnotist.

You can always be assured that Jennifer abides by the National Guild of Hypnotist’s Code of Ethics conducts business in a professional manor.

How many sessions will it take?

The amount of sessions necessary is dependent on the person and the issue. Some issues can be resolved in as few as one session, however, I recommend at least two sessions so we can fine-tune the results.

Hypnosis for Weight Loss can take as many as 3-5 sessions and some people prefer to continue with support sessions until they have reached their goal.

Becoming a Non-Smoker requires a 3 session commitment. The first session will last about 2 hours. The second session should take place 2-3 days later and will last about an hour. The third session can take place anytime in the next three months.

Will insurance cover my hypnosis session?
Most insurance plans do not cover hypnosis. You may want to check with your accountant, as some hypnosis sessions may be tax deductible.

Does the American Medical Association recognize hypnosis?

Yes, the AMA approved the use of hypnosis in 1958.
